Antithesis Foods Takes Part in Grant to Grow NYS Chickpeas
Antithesis Foods, a member of STSA incubator Rev: Ithaca Startup Works that is making better food through science, is continuing to push the boundaries of the New York State agricultural system. Through a collaboration with the Schuyler County Partnership for Economic Development (SCOPED), Antithesis is part of a team that recently received a grant from the New York Food Viability Institute to continue exploring the chickpea-growing potential of Upstate New York.
This grant extends the work initially started in 2021 through a partnership between Cornell University, Antithesis Foods, Ithaca Hummus, and SCOPED to grow pilot crops of chickpeas in the region. The new project, titled “Providing New York Farmers with a diversified revenue stream through additional Chickpea and Lupini trials to determine optimum growing conditions and yields,” will continue to explore new methods of growing chickpeas and develop best practices for farmers throughout the state.
Antithesis established its history of chickpea innovation through the startup’s initial product line, Grabanazos, a chickpea-based, chocolate-covered snack food. Their current consumer brand Protos brings that same novel chickpea-processing technology to crunchy baked crisps, available in a variety of flavors.
